Packing Pearls for a Weekend Away

The easiest jewelry to pack is the jewelry you have already tried with your clothes. Before a short trip, put the necklace or bracelet beside the outfits you are taking. One piece that works twice is often more useful than three alternatives you have not worn yet.

Give pearls their own soft pouch or lined compartment. A chain, a watch or a harder gemstone can rub the surface if everything travels together. Keep a necklace arranged without tight bends, fasten its clasp and make sure the pouch cannot spill open inside the bag.

For a ring or earrings, a small padded compartment can be easier to find than a deep loose pocket. Check that earring backs are secure and that nothing is likely to be crushed by a charger or another hard object. Choose a place you will remember, and use the same place each evening.

Pack a very soft clean cloth. It takes almost no room and gives you somewhere to set the jewelry down while dressing. Avoid leaving pearls on a bathroom counter next to cosmetics, or on a hot windowsill while you are out.

Take pearls off before swimming, exercising or using sunscreen. Wait until perfume and other products have dried before putting the jewelry back on. A holiday is not a reason to change the care routine that works at home.

Before you leave a room, check the pouch and the surface where you got ready. It is a more reliable habit than counting on memory when packing in a hurry. If a piece is particularly valuable or difficult to replace, consider whether you really want it on this trip, and check any relevant insurance terms separately.

Back home, unpack the jewelry rather than leaving it in the travel bag. Give each piece a quick look, wipe it if needed, and return it to its usual place. The less complicated the routine, the easier it is to keep.
